Meet the Team
Mr. Patrick Carton M.B. B.Ch., B.A.O., M.D., F.R.C.S (Tr&Orth)
Mr. Patrick Carton MD FRCS (Orth) is a full-time orthopaedic consultant and an internationally renowned specialist in surgery of the Hip and Groin, based at the Whitfield Clinic, Waterford.
He has developed the ‘sports hip repair’ technique, which he has taught to surgeons from across the world and has used to successfully treat over 1500 athletes, with hip impingement.
Prior to his move to Waterford in 2008, he worked as the Clinical Director of Trauma and Orthopaedics at the Southern Health NHS trust, in Northern Ireland.
He was recently awarded an honorary research associate for the department of health, sports and exercise science, in Waterford Institute of Technology.
He is an active member of a number of international teaching faculties and regularly presents his original work both nationally and internationally.
Mr. Carton’s specialist interest is in arthroscopic hip surgery, young adult hip replacement and the surgical management of acute and chronic groin injuries.

David Filan, MSc BSc, Clinical Research Assistant
Previously involved in research and teaching in an academic capacity, David joined the group in May 2015 as Clinical Research Assistant. Based in the Clinical Outcomes department he is involved in the collection and analysis of patient outcomes following hip arthroscopy and Sports Hip Repair.
Derek O’Neill, MSCP SOMM, Physiotherapist
Derek completed his training in London and worked for the National Health Service where he was a senior physiotherapist, specialising in orthopaedic and musculoskeletal conditions. While in London he worked with many professional athletes in athletics, rugby and spent two seasons with Queens Park Rangers. He has a keen interest in biomechanics and sports injuries. Derek continues to work within sports and currently is lead physiotherapist for Waterford United Football club.

Michael Morrissey, Surgical and Clinical Assistant
Michael’s role as surgical and clinical assistant has played an integral part in the overall care and review of patients during the past 8 years. He has assisted Mr. Carton in over 3,000 operations and contributes to patient outcome data collection and database processing following arthroscopic hip surgery.
Marie and Evelyn, Administration
Marie and Evelyn provide the administrative and clerical support for the practice and are often the first point of contact for those attending the clinic.
